Cosequin provides the raw materials that are essential for the synthesis of synovial fluid, plus the complete cartilage matrix including collagen, hyaluronic acid and the various modified sugar chains of glycosaminoglycans. Unlike steroids and some NSAID's which can damage chondrocytes, COSEQUIN is not a drug, it is a true, safe, nutraceutical. Each of the ingredients in COSEQUIN has its own primary function in connective tissue synthesis: Glucosamine Hydrochloride - stimulates synthesis of synovial fluid and the complete cartliage matrix, including collagen and proteoglycans. Chondroitin Sulphate - in addition to being the major glycosaminoglycan (GAG) found in cartilage, provides protection by inhibiting degradative enzymes. Manganese - must be present for proteoglycan biosynthesis to occur. The synergistic effect of all components working concurrently is what makes COSEQUIN unique. Initial Administration period is 4-6 weeks. Most animals should respond within this period. Improvement on COSEQUIN DS can range from gradual to dramatic. If the improvement is gradual it may go unnoticed by the owner. It is therefore important to keep the animal on the loading dose for at least 6 weeks. If there is a gradual improvement and COSEQUIN DS is discontinued, clinical regression will occur. Initial Administration: 4-6 weeks Dogs - 10-20kg: 2 capsules daily (morning and night) - 20-40kg: 3 capsules daily - over 40kg: 4 capsules daily Maintenance Administration: Dogs 10-20kg can oftern have their total daily dosage lowered in increments of 1/2 capsule per month until maintenance level is reached. Dogs over 20kg can often have their total daily dosage lowered in increments of 1 capsule per month until maintenance level is reached. Dosage can be increased at any time to maintain desired comfort level. If the pet does not respond as well when the dosage is decreased, return to the previous level. COSEQUIN DS can be used in animals under 10kg, however 1/2 capsule increments must be used. The capsules can easily be pulled apart and the contents sprinkled onto pet food.
