There is nothing quite like that gagging sound of a cat vomiting to make a cat owner launch out of the chair or bed at lightning speed.
There are many reasons that a cat may vomit, some are of no concern whereas sometimes it can be from a serious medical condition. Listed below are some of the more common reasons that cats may vomit;
- Hairballs
- Gutsing food / Eating too fast
- Changes in diet
- Food intolerance or allergies
- Eating non food items like paper, tissues, plants etc
- Poisoning – could be from toxins or plants
- Intestinal worms
- Gastroenteritis
- Pancreatitis
- Kidney disease
- Liver disease
- Heat stroke
- Intestinal blockage
Most cats will vomit intermittently throughout their life which is often of no real concern. Repeated or continual vomiting in your cat should never be ignored. If a cat is vomiting on a regular basis further investigation should be undertaken. If they are continually vomiting and/or showing other signs of being unwell like lethargy, weakness, pain, in distress, blood in vomit, urine or faeces a veterinarian should be consulted immediately to determine the cause.
