EquiShure®-Time-Released Hindgut Balancer for Horses with Subclinical Acidosis. EquiShure® is appropriate for horses suspected of suffering from subclinical acidosis. At-risk horses often express one or more signs that can derail athletic performance as well as reduce growth or reproductive potential. Signs of subclinical acidosis may include:
Decreased feed intake or complete inappetence in severe cases
- Mild to moderate colic signs of unexplained origin
- Poor feed efficiency and subsequent weight loss
- Loss of performance
- Development of stereotypies such as wood chewing, weaving, and stall walking
A diagnosis of subclinical acidosis is often overlooked initially when one or more of the aforementioned signs is noticed. EquiShure, a time-released hindgut buffer, may be beneficial in counteracting the effects of this syndrome.
Causes of Subclinical Acidosis:
Subclinical acidosis is thought to result from over consumption of either high-starch concentrates or pasture grasses rich in fructans. The demands placed on horses-as athletes and as breeding animals-dictate that substantial quantities of energy-rich feeds be consumed.
When large grain meals are fed to horses, it is often impossible for the stomach and small intestine to sufficiently digest and absorb the massive onslaught of starch. Hence, some starch moves into the hindgut without being sufficiently digested. As digestion of easily-fermentable starch progresses in the hindgut, the production of volatile fatty acids (VFA) and lactic acid increases, causing a significant decrease in the pH. When the hindgut endures insults such as this several times a day it teeters on becoming overwhelmed with acid. Additionally, because lactic acid is a stronger acid than the VFA, it can cause serious damage to the intestinal mucosa. In severe cases, lactate may contribute between 50 and 90% of the total acids in the hindgut.
The shift in pH provides an unfavorable environment for some of the many microorganisms that inhabit the hindgut and aid in digestion. In particular, fiber-digesting bacteria such as Ruminococcus albus and Fibrobacter succinogenes are sensitive to precipitous decreases in pH. For optimal performance, these bacteria favor an environment with a pH between 6.5 to 7.0. When pH drops to below 6.0, fiber-digesting bacteria become less efficient and begin to die off.
In contrast to fiber-digesting bacteria, lactate-producing and lactate-utilizing bacteria thrive in an environment with a low pH. Certain microorganisms such as Streptococcus bovis actually shift their metabolism and produce lactic acid rather than VFA when exposed to acidic conditions, serving only to compound the problem.
Changes in the pH of the hindgut due to alterations in the microbial populations and acid profiles cause a condition known as subclinical acidosis.
Signs of Subclinical Acidosis
One of the primary signs of subclinical acidosis is inappetence or decreased appetite. A horse is often reported to be "off his feed."Because the hindgut is overwhelmed with lactic acid when a horse is experiencing acidosis, the intestinal lining becomes inflamed and irritated, causing the horse discomfort. The irritation may be severe enough to induce behavior characteristic of colic. Furthermore and perhaps most detrimental to equine athletes is a reduction of feed efficiency. Long-term exposure of the intestinal lining to a low-pH environment may negatively affect the absorptive capacities of these structures, limiting the amount of energy available for performance.
In addition to these health concerns, a link between subclinical acidosis and sterotypies such as wood chewing, weaving, and stall walking has been suggested by researchers.
Because of the precarious nature of the hindgut of a horse afflicted with subclinical acidosis, it is less able to handle metabolic crises that healthy horses may be able to fend off. Hence, horses with subclinical acidosis are more susceptible to colic and laminitis.
Managing Subclinical Acidosis
Subclinical acidosis is not a novel health risk among domestic animals. Researchers first set out to solve the problem of subclinical acidosis in dairy cattle. Cows afflicted with rumen acidosis frequently exhibit abnormal or erratic eating patterns. More often than not, they eat less and that leads to decreased milk production and reduced profit. Therefore, the need to regulate the pH in the rumen became apparent. Researchers and dairymen successfully accomplished this by adding a buffer such as sodium bicarbonate to the feed.
Feeding Instructions

The availability and necessity of vitamin E in equine diets is well established. When healthy horses are given frequent access to fresh green forage such as good quality pasture, there is little need for supplementation of vitamin E. However, many horses today are managed without fresh forage in their diets. These horses can survive in such management systems, but they will likely not be consuming sufficient vitamin E for optimal health.
Vitamin E is first and foremost an antioxidant, an agent that keeps free radicals from forming and potentially weakening cells and tissues. In addition to its antioxidant responsibilities, vitamin E is vital to immune, cardiovascular, circulatory, neuromuscular, and reproductive functions. Therefore, supplementation with an effective vitamin E supplement is recommended for all horses that do not consume a significant quantity of green pasture.
Natural Vitamin E is preferred.
Research has revealed that vitamin E varies in its potency, based on whether it is natural or synthetic. The chemical structures of synthetic and natural vitamin E differ. Natural vitamin E is recognized as "d-alpha-tocopherol," and is made up of a single isomer. Synthetic vitamin E, termed "dl-alpha tocopherol," contains a mixture of eight different isomers, four tocopherols and four tocotrienols. Of these eight, only one is molecularly equivalent to natural vitamin E. Sources of natural vitamin E, especially Nano E, more effectively raise serum levels when compared to synthetic.
To make alpha-tocopherol stable for use in most supplements, it must be chemically joined with an acid during manufacture, a process called esterification. The acid, in this case acetate, acts as a padlock or protective cap that shields alpha-tocopherol from the damages caused by exposure to oxidative forces. Without esterification, alpha-tocopherol can quickly denature, losing its antioxidant properties and rendering it ineffective.
Once ingested, esterified alpha-tocopherol is subjected to normal digestive enzymes. A certain group of enzymes called esterases are chemically capable of unlocking the padlock created through esterification. Once free, alpha-tocopherol is available for absorption with its antioxidant properties intact.
Delivering Vitamin E Eficiently.
Fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin E must be offered to horses in a way that maximizes absorption. Because it is not mixed with other ingredients, the vitamin E in Nano E does not need to be protected by esterification, but it must become water-soluble or dispersible in liquid. This presents a challenge: As everyone knows, oil and water don't mix.
Each water-soluble vitamin E nanoparticle in Nano E is encapsulated or surrounded by liposomes, which allows the nanoparticle to mix evenly throughout a water-based environment such as the gastrointestinal tract. Researchers developed a method by which fat-soluble vitamins can be absorbed with great efficiency. Because of its oily nature, vitamin E is hydrophobic (water-shunning). To overcome this, researchers use proprietary technology to encapsulate the vitamin E in nanoparticles and then surround each nanoparticle with a hydrophilic (water-loving) outer layer. The hydrophilic outer layer, allows the nanoparticles to be rapidly and evenly released in water-based environments such as the gastrointestinal tract.
The greatest benefit of this unique delivery system is an increase in the bioavailability of vitamin E. The more vitamin E that is absorbed into the bloodstream, the more available it is for use as a body-wide antioxidant essential for tissue repair and for its imperative roles in various body systems.
Controlled studies at Kentucky Equine Research indicate that Nano E is superior to synthetic and other natural vitamin E sources.
USES:
Confinement.
Horses that do not have access to pasture may not be consuming optimal levels of vitamin E. Nano E provides this essential vitamin in a form that is easily absorbed, and is appropriate for horses of all ages that are stabled due to training schedules, travel, or injury.
Performance.
Horses asked to work strenuously benefit from Nano E. A regular schedule of training and competition makes performance horses susceptible to muscle damage, which is due largely to oxidative stress. Nano E provides fast acting antioxidant protection for hard-working horses.
Breeding.
Appropriate for broodmares and stallions, Nano E provides optimal antioxidant protection. Broodmares benefit from increased fertility and increased transfer of passive immunity to their foals. Vitamin E supplementation has been linked to increased libido and semen quality in stallions.
Neurological problems.
Veterinarians and researchers have found that vitamin E supplementation often helps in recovery from certain neurological problems. Nano E provides natural-source vitamin E in a form that is quickly absorbed.
Stressful events.
Prior to relocation, long-distance travel, weaning, or other stress inducing events, Nano E provides a boost to antioxidant and immune defenses.
Convalescence.
Following injuries such as lacerations, puncture wounds, or burns, the addition of Nano E to the diet will increase antioxidant activity and enhance recovery.

Restore Paste is a carefully formulated electrolyte supplement designed to match the composition of sweat.
When horses sweat they lose electrolytes, with the principal losses being chloride, sodium, potassium and magnesium. If these essential nutrients are not replenished, the consequences may include conditions such as dehydration, muscular weakness, overheating, fatigue, and poor performance. The composition of Restore Paste mimics that of horse sweat so it replaces what has been lost from sweat.
Restore Paste is an easy-to-administer buffered paste. Using the same proven mixture of ingredients found in Restore as a foundation, Restore Paste includes a buffering agent that supports gastrointestinal comfort in horses.
USES:
- For routine or strategic electrolyte replacement for all horses that sweat
- To supply potassium to hard-working horses
- Easy-to-administer oral paste
DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
Administer one tube (60g) after strenuous performance activity. One tube of Restore Paste provides an equivalent amount of electrolytes as 30g of Restore.
For best results, administer Restore Paste after competition, work or in any situation where the horse sweats. In addition to Restore Paste, all horses should have access to a salt block or additional loose salt.
SIZE: 60g (Twin Pack)

Equine athletes are prone to injury. Certain injuries happen quickly but others are a result of cumulative wear and tear. Hyaluronic acid (HA) plays a vital role in maintaining the health of connective tissue and optimizing normal joint function. Synovate HA® may assist with supporting equine athletes through the rigors of training and competition. Owners and trainers of high-performance horses rely on intra-articular, intravenous, or oral HA to help protect their horses' joints.
Manage Joints Proactively:
Synovate HA® provides horses with a safe, easily absorbed, and easy-to-use form of sodium hyaluronate. The core ingredient, HA, is a naturally occurring substance found in various connective tissues in the horse's body. HA contributes significantly to maintenance of cartilage health and elasticity, joint fluid viscoelasticity, and lubrication of the entire joint mechanism. In addition, HA has anti-inflammatory properties, especially useful for high-motion joints such as those in equine limbs.
The horse maintains considerable reservoirs of HA within its body, yet as horses mature and more athletic demands are placed on them inflammation leads to breakdown of HA in the joint fluid. The loss of HA leads to lower viscoelasticity in the joint fluid and further inflammation, which can damage cartilage and make the joint disease worse. Therefore, it is desirable to manage joint care proactively with Synovate HA®.
Superior Biological Activity:
Researchers have identified differences in biological activities for HA of different molecular weights. HA with a high molecular weight (more than 500,000 daltons) has the greatest biological response. Further, high molecular weight HA created from microbial fermentation, such as Synovate HA®, has the greatest likelihood for matching the known attributes of native HA found in the horse's body.
To support your horse's joints, choose Synovate HA®.

Muscle damage is a constant risk in working horses, leading to reduced performance or inability to work. PRESERVE contains the antioxidants that help to preserve normal muscle function and minimize the severity of any muscle damage, including tying up. It will aid in the reduction of stiffness and soreness during or after work that can hamper performance or recovery. PRESERVE helps horses recover after work, reducing down-time between performance and return to training.
PRESERVE contains vitamins and minerals that help keep the immune system operating effectively. The stress of work can often lead to the immune system becoming less effective, with the result that the horse becomes more susceptible to diseases such as colds and coughs. Research has shown that supplementary Vitamin E and selenium provided to a pregnant mare can boost antibody transfer to the foal in colostrum.
PRESERVE contains higher levels of antioxidants than are contained in most general vitamin and mineral supplements. It also contains additional vitamin C, selenium and magnesium to provide advantages over supplements which only contain vitamin E. This is especially important in selenium deficient areas. Each dose of PRESERVE contains organic selenium. Research has shown that organic selenium is retained more efficiently by the horse than inorganic forms.
