What is a Probiotic and how does it work?
  The digestive system of all animals and birds is home to literally billions of bacteria and yeasts referred to as Microflora.

The inner bark of the Slippery Elm Tree has been used as a herbal remedy for centuries by indigenous peoples and it is now employed by both herbal and orthodox medicines.

Slippery elm bark powder is pale pink-brown in colour and its distinctive mucilaginous (slimy and slippery) texture, when mixed with moisture, sees it applied to conditions where mucous membranes are irritated/inflamed. Toxin Binder has been formulated from specific ingredients that may bind harmful mycotoxins in the horse≈'s digestive tract during periods of high mycotoxin contamination. Toxin Binder is designed to bind to the polar and non-polar mycotoxins.

What is a Mycotoxin?

Mycotoxins can be found in the fungi that grow on some grasses -mainly paspalum, rye, couch and some weeds and clover. More than 500 mycotoxins have been identified to date. They are more prevalent in hot and humid conditions (spring and summer) and can also be found in some commercial feeds and hays.

About the Ingredients:

Mycosorb A+ contains two main ingredients; a specific strain of yeast and algae meal. Mycotoxins are thought to bind to this strain of yeast, thus removing them from the horse≈'s digestive tract. The algae is also thought to target and absorb different types of toxins, removing a wider range of toxins when combined.

Equitec Clean Culture is a 10 day program that may benefit the health of the digestive system. It has been designed to promote the growth of good bacteria and eradicate bad bacteria by promoting the regeneration of gut flora, which in turn may increase the uptake and absorption of nutrients.

Many horses will suffer a digestive disorder at some time in their life. These may be caused by long periods between feeds, diets with a high grain intake, extended administration of antibiotics, sudden change of feed, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, ulcers or horses who are naturally highly strung. Clean Culture aims to act as a detox for the digestive system so that it may start to repair and heal itself from these disorders.

Clean Culture may be fed over the tongue or added to hard feeds. The addition of licorice powder increases the palatability of the formula, which comes in the form of a paste.

BioMOS (mannan oligosaccharide) has been added to help boost gastrointestinal health and promote the growth of healthy bacteria. The inclusion of sea minerals may boost the antioxidant content of the formula and provide essential fatty acids.

• More than half of all horses will experience ulcers at some stage in their life.
• Horses who have ulcers will often present symptoms such as going off their feed and can appear nervous or 'hot'.

Equine Sandlube is a natural fibre to assist removal of sand from the bowel of horses. This product does not cause scouring.

Sand passes in the 'normal droppings' approximately 24 to 72 hours after ingestion.

Horses with colic should not be treated with this product without veterinary advice.

Active consituent: Psyllium (Plantago Ovata) 850g/kg

Dose & Administration: Give 1 scoop (125gm) on 2 consecutive days per week. Give 2 scoops (250gm) twice weekly for high risk cases. Mix in with dry feed or add to wet feed after it has been prepared or mixed. To increase the palatibility of Equine Sandlube (1) mix with molasses to make a crumble and spread over feed or (2) mix with 1 cup of canola oil and mix with feed.

Indications:
Gastroenteritis and diarrhoea in dogs and horses.

Composition:
Bismuth salicylate 17.5 mg/mL; Bentonite

Actions
Antidiarrhoeal : The insoluble salt is converted to bismuth carbonate and sodium salicylate after oral administration. It lines the mucosal surface, absorbs toxic compounds, is mildly astringent and has protective, antacid and antiseptic properties.

Peptosyl is non-antibiotic - It will not cause bacterial resistance to develop. It is non-toxic in animals and humans, displays antibacterial activity, decreases water loss, and may also help reduce the pain of inflammatory bowel diseases.

Bismuth salicylate and other bismuth salts have been shown to inhibit plaque formation of enteric rotavirus in vitro.

The salicylate component has an antiprostaglandin synthetase effect which may enhance its action in controlling acute secretory diarrhoea.

Bentonite is a natural clay earth with properties similar to activated charcoal, and the ability to bind bacterial endotoxin.

Dosage and Administration:
Horses : 0.5 to 1 mL/kg bodyweight orally.
Dogs : 0.25 to 0.5 mL/kg bodyweight orally.

Repeat dose every 6 hours for 36 hours, and then at 12 hour intervals for a further 2 to 3 days.

Shake container thoroughly before extracting dose.

Warnings:
Precautions : If the condition does not resolve with appropriate symptomatic therapy, further diagnostic evaluation should be considered.
Warnings : Safety in pregnant animals has not been established. Faecal colour may appear darker and be misinterpreted as melaena.
Meat Withholding Period : Horses - 28 days.

Berg Oil is a traditional remedy reported to control excessive fermentation and decrease gastrointestinal discomfort in horses, cattle and sheep.

Berg Oil is a combination of wood tars, turpentine oils and methylated spirits that has been used for many years and has been reported to decrease gas production associated with fermentation.

Taken orally, Berg Oil does not irritate the mucous membranes of the mouth and the digestive tract.

The actives in Berg Oil are reported to be calmative and may assist in relieving gastric discomfort. They may also help counteract the griping action of purgatives.

Methylated spirits reduces the frequency of sudden muscle spasm, background spasticity with associated colic pain and functional disability caused by the excess gastrointestinal fermentation.
