Electrolytes for Animals

Lectade Sachets when reconstituted as directed provide an oral rehydration therapy containing a balanced mixture of glucose, glycine and electrolytes with the added advantage of being a non-antibiotic oral supportive treatment.

Once diluted Lectade Solution is isotonic, ensuring glucose and glycine are actively absorbed by the intestinal tract, causing water and sodium to be absorbed simultaneously with these nutrients and resulting in a high degree of rehydration in scouring and dehydrated animals.

Where specific disease control (i.e. antibiotic therapy) is indicated, it can be administered in conjunction with Lectade Solution.

Indicated for:

• Diarrhoea
• Dehydration (simple or associated with diseases such as canine parvovirus and feline panleucopaenia)
• Post travelling stress and dehydration
• Post-surgical or disease convalescence
  
• Concomitant treatment of viral or bacterial scours

Directions for Use:

For oral treatment only.

Sections A and B must always be used together when preparing Lectade Solution.

Add the contents of section A and B of one Lectade Sachet to 2 litres of warm water, stir until dissolved.

To make 500 mL of Lectade Solution: using a 5 mL medicine spoon add 1 level spoonful of section A and 3 heaped spoonfuls of section B to 500 mL warm water, stir until dissolved, store remainder of powder in a dry place.

Most dogs find Lectade Solution palatable and will drink it voluntarily. Palatability for cats is variable.

Lectade Solution may also be administered orally via syringe.

Continue treatment for 1 to 2 days after the animal appears clinically recovered and is feeding normally.

Dosage Guide:

Dogs
Miniature - 125 mL, 2 to 3 times daily
Medium - 500 mL, 2 to 3 times daily

Cats

Calves
1 L/10 kg bodyweight daily, divided into 2 or more doses
1.5 L/10 kg bodyweight daily initially if dehydration is severe, divided into 3 or more doses
Scouring Calves: As soon as signs of scours are seen withdraw milk or milk replacer and feed the required dose of Lectade Solution for 2 days. For the next 2 days return to feeding milk at half the rate and, either separate to or mixed with, an equal amount of prepared Lectade Solution. Return to full milk feeding thereafter
Bought-in or Stressed Calves: Feed 2 L of Lectade Solution instead of milk as the first feed on arrival. For the next feed use 1 L milk or milk replacer mixed with 1 L Lectade Solution. Return to full milk feeding thereafter. Adequate colostrum must be fed to calves within 48 hours of birth.

Pigs
A litter of 1 week old piglets will consume approximately 2-3 L per day
A weaner pig will consume approximately 1-2 L per day.
Lectade solution should be made available for 4 days. If there has been some improvement after 4 days, but the scour has not cleared completely, treatment may be continued for up to 8 days in total.
Suckling Piglets: Immediately scour symptoms show, fresh Lectade solution made up as directed should be made available, in a cube drinker or similar clean vessel, to the whole litter.
Weaned Pigs: If these pigs are showing signs of scour, make fresh Lectade solution available in a suitable clean vessel, cube drinker, trough or drum with nipple drinker

Lambs
150 mL of Lectade solution 3 times daily is a suitable dosage regimen. Lectade solution made up as directed should be administered orally to scouring or dehydrated neonatal lambs by drenching bottle or stomach tube

Restore Paste is a carefully formulated electrolyte supplement designed to match the composition of sweat.

When horses sweat they lose electrolytes, with the principal losses being chloride, sodium, potassium and magnesium. If these essential nutrients are not replenished, the consequences may include conditions such as dehydration, muscular weakness, overheating, fatigue, and poor performance. DIRECTIONS FOR USE:

Vytrate is a non-antibiotic supportive treatment for scouring or dehydrated calves, lambs, pigs & piglets, foals, dogs, and cats. Vytrate reduces scour duration and severity by replacing lost fluids and electrolytes.

Active Constituents:

Indications:

Dosage:
Reconstitution/ Dilution
Sections 1 and 2 must be used together.
Add the contents of section 1 and section 2 to 2 litres of warm water. Stir until dissolved.
To prepare 500 mL, add 1 level 5 mL medicine spoonful of powder from section 1 and 3 heaped spoonfuls of powder from section 2. Refrigerate remaining solution after use and use within 24 hours. Prepare fresh solution daily.

Foals:
Administer solution, made up as directed, orally to scouring or dehydrated foals by drenching using a bottle or stomach tube. As a guide, 1 to 2 litres of fresh Vytrate solution 2 to 3 times daily, depending on bodyweight and severity of the symptoms, has been reported as a suitable dosage regimen for neonatal foals.

Cats, Dogs:
Vytrate solution, reconstituted as directed, should be made available to diarrhoeic or dehydrated animals as supportive therapy following specific treatment for the conditions described.
Many dogs find Vytrate palatable and will drink the solution voluntarily. Palatability for cats is variable. Vytrate may also be administered orally via dosage syringe. Treatment should be continued for 1 to 2 days after the animal appears clinically recovered and is feeding normally. As a guide, the following dosage regimens of prepared Vytrate solution are recommended:-
Cats, miniature dogs (<5 kg):   125 mL 2-3 times daily
Small dogs (5 – 10 kg):   250 mL 2-3 times daily
Medium dogs (11 – 20 kg):   500 mL 2-3 times daily
Large dogs (>20 kg):    750 mL 2- 3 times daily

Calves:
Bought-in or Stressed Calves (not scouring):
Feed 2 litres of diluted solution, made up as above, as the first feed on arrival.
For the next scheduled feed, use 1 litre diluted solution at the same time as, but not mixed with, milk or milk replacer. Thereafter, feed normal diet.
Scouring Calves:
Feed 1 to 1.5 litres of diluted solution per 10 kg bodyweight daily, divided into two or more daily doses.
If scouring is established or severe, causing dehydration, the higher dose should be used initially and fed in three or four divided doses. 2 litres of diluted solution given morning and night will be adequate in many cases. Replace with fresh solution every 24 hours. To maintain adequate energy and nutrient intake, milk feeding should continue as normal during periods of scouring. Diluted solution should be given between these milk feeds.

• Fresh drinking water should be available at all times.
• Keep feeding utensils clean and avoid overfeeding.
• Normal feeding should be resumes after the course of treatment.
• Many scouring problems can be avoided by feeding adequate colostrum early in the calf’s life.
• Seek veterinary advice if blood is present or if scours persist beyond four days.

Pigs:
Suckling Piglets:
Make available solution made up as directed to the whole litter in a cube drinker or similar clean vessel as soon as scour symptoms show. A litter of 1 week old piglets will consume approximately 2-3 litres per day. The amount consumed will increase with the age of the piglets. Piglets may be dosed individually, by giving 20 to 30 mL diluted solution 3 or 4 times a day, taking care to avoid choking. Take care to ensure that piglets are not left without diluted solution, drinking water, or sow’s milk.
Check the supply of solution every 12 hours and replenish if necessary.
Weaned Pigs
Scouring weaned pigs should have fresh diluted solution available in a suitable clean vessel. Restrict solid feed intake for one or two days, but continue to supply fresh drinking water.
As a general guide, weaners will consume 1-2 litres/ weaner/ day.

Duration of treatment (all pigs):
Diluted solution should be made available for 4 days, but if the scour has not cleared completely, treatment may be continued for up to 8 days in total. If there is no sign of improvement, consult a veterinary surgeon.
Periods of stress:
For the 2 to 3 days following any period of stress (e.g. weaning, transport), Vytrate will help to increase fluid and electrolyte consumption and absorption, so minimising any possible setback. As diluted solution is extremely palatable and excessive drinking may occur, diluted solution at half the strength recommended above may be used, for this indication only. Replace with fresh solution every 24 hours.

Sheep:
Scouring Lambs:
Give 150 to 200 mL fresh diluted solution 2 to 4 times daily as required. The solution should be adjusted to body heat and given via a feeding bottle and teat. The lamb should also suck the ewe.
If bottle-fed, to maintain adequate energy and nutrient intake, milk feeding should continue as normal during period of scouring. Solution should be given between these milk feeds.

Note:
When specific disease control (i.e. antibiotic therapy) is indicated, it can be administered in conjunction with Vytrate. Stressed and scouring animals requiring rehydration are at risk of multiple organ dysfunction. It is strongly recommended that veterinary advice is sought when considering treating dehydrated animals.

Osmotic balance assists to establish and maintain adequate retention of fluids in the intestines, cells and muscle tissue and in turn helps to avoid dehydration.

When specific osmotic nutraceuticals and minerals with high bioavailability are added to the diet the need for electrolytes is considerably reduced. This dietary approach is a natural means of maintaining hydration.

Note:

When a horse is badly dehydrated full rehydration can take from 72 hours to 96 hours. The duration of treatment for rehydration of the horse is relevant to the extent of dehydration in each case.

Research Details:

A group study conducted over 14 days with 20 horses showed an increase of between 25% and 30% daily water intake. These horses were previously drinking about 35 litres a day.

Another observation over 14 days with 2 horses that had previously been drinking 60 litres or more a day showed that their water intake reduced by approximately 20%.

Osmotic imbalance may be a precursor to dehydration and possibly tying up. We have observed horses that previously required saline drenching between races due to dehydration. Since they have been supplemented with OSMOPLEX they have not needed to be

drenched. Blood analyses have shown their electrolyte balance to be normal.

Many trainers rely on the pinch test to determine dehydration. This is not a method that can be regarded as being entirely accurate. Previous scientific studies as well as our own research have revealed that the slow return of skin fold is only evident when a horse is about 6% dehydrated.

Numerous case studies have shown that 2% dehydration is enough to reduce a horse's race performance.

The following are approximate guidelines for pinch testing of the skin:

1. Skin folds which remain creased after being pinched are usually in excess of 6% dehydration and require urgent treatment.

2. Skin folds which return back to normal slowly are an indication of approximately 4% to 5% dehydration.

3. Skin folds which return to normal instantly may be an indication of 1 to 3% dehydration.

The use of the pinch test or more accurately the pinch guess is a clear indication that there is a grey area of approximately 3 % when using this method to assess dehydration.

When we equate this to race performance 2% dehydration represents the loss of approximately 2 to 3 lengths over a distance of 1600 metres. The only accurate means of assessing hydration in a horse is through blood analysis and interpretation performed by a

reputable scientific laboratory.

Severely Dehydrated Horses

Travelling in hot weather or over long distances
Give 40-60mL of Electrolyte Liquid for Horses concentrate over the tongue and immediately follow with fresh water within 30-60 minutes prior to commencing travelling. Repeat the dose every 2-3 hours whilst travelling, and again upon arrival.

After Racing/Exercise
Mix 10mL of Electrolyte Liquid for Greyhounds into 250mL (1 cup) of water and offer as a drink during cooling down period. Provide a bowl of fresh, cool water in conjunction with the Electrolyte Liquid for Greyhounds drink in the kennel.

Before Travelling
Mix 5mL of Electrolyte Liquid for Greyhounds into 125mL (½ cup) of water before commencing travel.

Travelling in hot weather or with excitable greyhounds
Mix 5mL of Electrolyte Liquid for Greyhounds in 125mL (½ cup) of water and give solution every two to three hours.

Hot weather / Nursing bitches
Mix 40mL of Electrolyte Liquid for Greyhounds per litre of water. Prepare a bulk solution and offer as an alternative drink. Portion out to each greyhound as required, in addition to a bowl of fresh water. Bulk solution may be refrigerated. Always mix a fresh batch of solution each day.

Prone to dehydration / Nervous greyhounds
Mix 10mL of Electrolyte Liquid for Greyhounds into 250mL (1 cup) of water.

Pre-race dehydration
For dehydrated greyhounds, give 10mL of Electrolyte Liquid for Greyhounds over the tongue, morning and night, for two days prior to racing, with immediate access to fresh water.

Cramping Greyhounds
Mix 10mL of Electrolyte Liquid for Greyhounds into 250mL (1 cup) of water, morning and night. Also, provide a bowl of made-up solution (refer to “Hot weather” dilution rate) in addition to a bowl of fresh water in the kennel.

Important Notes
Potassium is the primary electrolyte mineral found inside body cells. It functions to maintain the correct amount of fluid within the cell as well as normal electrical activity of the cells. Ensure access to clean, fresh drinking water.

Give 30mL (½ tube) per 500kg bodyweight after moderate exercise or travel. For heavy exercise or sweating, repeat after 20–40 minutes.
