Top 10 Life Skills To Teach Your Puppy

  1. The Name Game:  Teach your puppy to associate their name with positive experiences and practice having them look at you with cues like 'watch' or 'look'.
  2. Settle on a Mat:  Encourage your puppy to settle on a mat in various environments by making the mat a positive space with treats.
  3. Create a “Zen Zone”:  Provide a safe space like a crate for your puppy to rest and ensure they get plenty of sleep to aid development and training.
  4. Play!  Engage in fun games like tug, hide and seek, and other playful activities to bond with your puppy.
  5. Walking Nicely on a Lead:  Teach your puppy to walk on a loose lead by practicing without the lead first and rewarding them for staying by your side.
  6. Recall:  Train your puppy to respond reliably to a recall cue by conditioning the word with treats and gradually adding movement, distance, and distractions.
  7. Social Skills:  Teach your puppy to be calm around other dogs and people, and practice polite greetings to avoid overzealous behavior.
  8. Wait and Stay:  Train your puppy in the wait and stay commands for safety and ease of management, especially in multi-pet households and public spaces.
  9. Body Awareness Skills/Confidence:  Help your puppy navigate surfaces safely and build confidence with 'urban agility' exercises, keeping activities low and safe.
  10. How to Exchange or Swap Items:  Teach your puppy to swap items in their mouth for higher-value items to ensure safety, especially during cane toad season.

Bonus Tip:  Focus on building a strong relationship with your puppy through positive, patient training, fun, and play, starting in low-distraction environments.

Tips & Tricks

From Our Help Centre

Puppy Socialisation

Like human children, puppies are not automatically born with social skills, or the skills that they need to live successfully with their family. Your puppy needs pleasant experiences, so they learn how to cope in the world. The optimum age to socialise your puppy is between 3 and 14 weeks.

Crate Training

Dogs will often need to be trained to use, like and understand their crate, particularly if they have never been in one before. Teaching them to be happy and feel safe in the crate is important and can take some time. Here are some tips to keep in mind on how to crate train your dog;

Vaccinations

Vaccinations are available to protect your puppy from some of the most contagious and life threatening illnesses that they may come in contact with. Vaccination and prevention is always better for your pet, as well as being more cost effective than having to treat your pet if they contract one of these diseases.
