Jenquine Bone Formula Forte is a fortified calcium supplement for horses on hard feed.

Bighead and osteoporosis are a constant risk from high phosphorus, oxalates and phytates in feeds such as cereal and grassy hays, grains, bran and sub-tropical grass (including buffel, panic, kikuyu and setaria) found throughout Australia. Signs include shifting intermittent lameness, reluctance to move forward freely, joint pain, 'creaky' joints, stiffness, dental problems and an increased risk of fractures, tendon and ligament injuries.

Maintaining mineral intake throughout a horse's life helps protect against dietary imbalances and musculoskeletal weakness. Only chelated calcium is protected from oxalates and phytates in the feed.

The importance of calcium:

Calcium is essential for life itself (regulating heartbeat, nerve function, muscle contraction and blood clotting) and blood levels are tightly regulated by parathyroid hormone (PTH). PTH is released when diets are low in calcium — causing calcium to move out of the bones and into the blood, and leading to demineralisation of bones and osteoporosis. Mild cases are difficult to detect, manifesting as vague shifting lameness, shortened stride, soreness at ligament and tendon insertions, joint pain and swelling. In more severe forms, ligament and tendon injuries increase and there may be a watery nasal discharge, poor coat, difficulty chewing, dental pain and swelling of the jaws, maxilla, mandible and nasal bones.

Management and prevention:

The dietary calcium deficiency must be corrected. Chelation protects calcium from oxalate attack, is over 95% absorbed into the blood stream and, in the presence of oxalates, is more bioavailable than inorganic forms (lime and dicalcium phosphate). Dr Jennifer Stewart's Bone Formula Forte contains chelated calcium PLUS essential bone trace minerals that are deficient in Australian soils, pastures, hays and grains.

What are Hemp Hulls and Hearts?
Hemp hulls are the shell of the hemp heart/seed that remains after the seed has been extracted. During the de-hulling process a certain percent (approx. 20%) of the seed remains, resulting in this blended Hemp Hulls and Hearts product. They are an excellent source of fibre and amino acids, and provide the essential fatty acids omega 3 and 6.

Hemp in the human market is fast becoming established as a super food and has been used in food, tea and medicine in China for at least 3000 years.

Why feed Hemp Hulls and Hearts?
Hemp Hulls and Hearts are an excellent source of high quality protein (20%) which supports muscle function, nutrient absorption, and other important body functions.

It also contains a superior amino acid profile with 9 essential amino acids that horses require for protein production. These amino acids are not naturally made by the horse and are vital for a horse’s health especially in regards to the building, fueling and recovery of muscles during exercise.

Hemp Hulls and Hearts contains more than 20% oil, mostly in the form of the essential fatty acids Omega 3 and 6, also Omega 9. Omega 3’s have anti-inflammatory benefits which support joint and immune system function.

The hemp oil also provides a source of Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA). GLA in humans has been linked to supporting hormonal imbalances in females along with improved brain function.

Hemp Hulls and Hearts is low in sugar and starch as well as containing useful levels of digestible fibre (almost 30%), favourable when feeding a high fibre, low sugar and starch diet. It can be fed to all classes of horses including those with grain intolerances or metabolic issues.

Hemp Hulls and Hearts also contains anti-oxidants in the form of Vitamin E as well as Magnesium, Zinc, phosphorus and Calcium. Hemp Hulls and Hearts is a GMO free product, and is Australian grown and processed.

Enerselen Injection is a specially formulated injection for protection, management and treatment of muscle disorders of horses. It is used as an aid in the control of muscular dystrophy, and a muscular stimulant, in horses and dogs.

The active constituents of Enerselen Injection are:

ATP (adenosine triphosphate), providing an immediate source of muscle energy.

URDINE TRIPHOSPHATE is a source of muscle energy, related to ATP.

HEPTAMINOL HCL increases blood flow for exercise and endurance capacity. It helps build and maintain muscles. A new study indicates HEPTAMINOL delays the onset of muscle fatigue.

VITAMIN B12 (cyanocobalamin) to stimulate appetite for energy metabolism.

SELENIUM is an essential trace element. For metabolic processes, and energy. Selenium has anti-oxidant properties, protects muscle from damage. It directly and indirectly prevents 'tying-up' and related muscle problems.

MAGNESIUM ASPARTATE increases oxygen delivery to muscle tissue. For muscle strength and endurance, and has a role in muscle contraction.

POTASSIUM ASPARTATE for glucose/glycogen (i.e., energy) metabolism.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE:

Inject slowly subcutaneously or intramuscularly.

Horses: 4 mL per 100 kg bodyweight.
Dogs: 1 mL per 25 kg bodyweight.

Prevention: One injection each week for 2-3 weeks.
Treatment: One Injection every 3 days for 9-12 days.

MEAT WITHHOLDING PERIOD: DO NOT ADMINISTER less than 28 days before slaughter for human consumption.

Directions for Use

Mix the recommended daily amount into slightly dampened feed. The daily dose may be divided between two feeds if preferred.

One enclosed scoop holds approximately 60g.

Miniature horses: 20–30g daily
Ponies and galloways: 40–60g daily
Horses: 60–90g daily

If feeding a fortified feed, such as pellets or sweet feed mixes, reduce the EVM Essentials feeding rate to half the recommended amount.

Do not exceed the recommended feeding rates unless advised by a veterinarian or equine nutritionist.

TURMERIC (curcuma longa and curcuma xanthorhizza):

Known as the vibrant golden ingredient used liberally in Indian curries, turmeric has a long history of use in both Indian and Chinese traditional medicine. They are believed to have powerful antioxidant properties (significantly more so than vitamin E or C) and may increase the body's ability to neutralise free radicals before they damage healthy cells and cell membranes. Horses housed in stables or yards with restricted access to turnout can exhibit significant bone demineralisation, increasing the risk of fracture and breakdown. Bone Food Plus ensures all the essential building blocks are in the diet to optimise bone health and strength.

Calcium, phosphorus and magnesium are the main structural components of bone. Low dietary calcium and phosphorus can lead to weakening of bones in horses, especially performance horses, lactating mares and growing horses.

Many diets do not provide optimal levels or correct ratios of minerals calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. Horses fed diets high in grain and hay are usually deficient in calcium. Tropical forages and high-oxalate pastures contain calcium-binding agents, which may contribute to the serious bone disorder Bighead disease. Magnesium deficiency can occur when horses are fed high-grain and low-roughage diets, whilst sweating heavily, or when factors interfere with magnesium absorption.

Vitamin D plays a key role in calcium and phosphorus absorption and is an important nutrient for stabled horses where it plays a vital role in bone health. The role of Vitamin K in bone development has been recently recognised and it is an important nutrient in horses deprived of green grass. Zinc, copper and manganese are important trace minerals, which play a role in bone development. Levels in grains and forages are often deficient, so a supplementary source is required.

Richtafort Phosphorous 125 + Vitamin B12 Injection for horses, cattle and dogs is a high potency phosphorus injection which also provides additional vitamin B12.

It gives 500mg of phosphorus at the recommended dose (25mL) and supplies fast, reliable, predictable phosphorus for the athletic horse.

Phosphorus is essential for bone and skeletal development. It promotes carbohydrate metabolism, energises skeletal and cardiac muscle, and supports metabolic function. Vitamin B12 influences red blood cell production and improves carbohydrate and protein utilisation.

Phosphorus is not produced by the body, it must be externally supplied. Horses can get phosphorus in grains, hay and roughage, as phosphorus supplements such as mono sodium phosphate, or as inorganic phosphorus (the most available phosphorus) through Richtafort 125 phosphorus supplement + vitamin B12 injection.

Phosphorus from grains, hay and roughage is variable. The absorption of oral phosphorus is low (30–50%).

The athletic horse needs more phosphorus to replace phosphorus used up at all levels of exercise (slow and fast work, walking, swimming, etc.), to replace phosphorus consumed at racing and for bone, cartilage and joints.

The immediate source of muscular energy includes compounds that require phosphorus for their formation. These include adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and glycogen.

ATP is the immediate fuel for all muscular reaction and must be present in the muscle cell at all times.

Creatine phosphate is a major storage form of high energy phosphates in the muscle. Creatine phosphate is required for muscular contractions. It is reported to delay the onset of muscular fatigue.

Richtafort is a predictable and reliable phosphorus supplement for horses.

Begin treating horses with Richtafort when they start racing.
Treat horses regularly with Richtafort (once a week).
Treat with Richtafort after racing to replace phosphorus "used up" by muscular activity.
Horses that are "picky and poor eaters" can be treated with Richtafort.

How Does It Work?

Thiamine (Vitamin B1) plays an important role in the metabolism of carbohydrates and energy production for all cells. Thiamine is most important in the breakdown of pyruvic acid a waste product in hard working muscles along with lactic acid. In any situation where carbohydrates are the major energy source or when glucose is added to the diet thiamine requirement is increased significantly.

Thiamine is essential as part of the coenzyme which is involved in the breakdown of glucose for energy.

Thiamine in conjunction with Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) is essential in the metabolism of proteins and amino acids. Thiamine has effects on all tissues. The most sensitive are nerves stomach and heart.

Free Thiamine cannot be stored in the body and it is rapidly absorbed from the intestine or blood as well as from injection sites. Like all B Complex vitamins Thiamine is water soluble so it is rapidly absorbed and excreted from the body and requires regular supplementation especially in hard working animals when dietary input will probably not be sufficient.

Thiamine is found in both meat and cereal products. Small amounts are manufactured in the gut as long as horses are not under stress.

Thiamine in food is destroyed by cooking. Beef loses up to 75% of its Thiamine when cooked.

High doses of Thiamine are reported to help calm nervous or over excitable horses.

Clinical signs of Thiamine deficiency include fatigue muscle weakness loss of appetite and increased heart rate. (This may be an important factor in endurance horses fed high grain diets).

Many of these signs can be traced back to increased tissue levels of lactic and pyruvic acids. Nerve cells are particularly dependant on carbohydrate metabolismand normal nerve function is greatly effected by increased levels of these acids during hard work.

Give 5 - 10mL by intramuscular injection regularly twice weekly or as advised by a veterinary surgeon.
