The year was 1976 and Joe Markham was a loving but puzzled pet parent to Fritz, a German Shepherd whose favorite hobby was chewing on rocks. One day, while working on a VW Bus, Joe began tossing auto parts to Fritz to lure him away from the rocks. Among those parts was a rubber suspension component and when it bounced over to Fritz, he was immediately drawn to it, picked it up and dropped it in Joe’s lap.
