About this item
Indications:
Gastroenteritis and diarrhoea in dogs and horses.
Composition:
Bismuth salicylate 17.5 mg/mL; Bentonite
Actions
Antidiarrhoeal : The insoluble salt is converted to bismuth carbonate and sodium salicylate after oral administration. It lines the mucosal surface, absorbs toxic compounds, is mildly astringent and has protective, antacid and antiseptic properties.
Peptosyl is non-antibiotic - It will not cause bacterial resistance to develop. It is non-toxic in animals and humans, displays antibacterial activity, decreases water loss, and may also help reduce the pain of inflammatory bowel diseases.
Bismuth salicylate and other bismuth salts have been shown to inhibit plaque formation of enteric rotavirus in vitro.
The salicylate component has an antiprostaglandin synthetase effect which may enhance its action in controlling acute secretory diarrhoea.
Bentonite is a natural clay earth with properties similar to activated charcoal, and the ability to bind bacterial endotoxin.
Dosage and Administration:
Horses : 0.5 to 1 mL/kg bodyweight orally.
Dogs : 0.25 to 0.5 mL/kg bodyweight orally.
Repeat dose every 6 hours for 36 hours, and then at 12 hour intervals for a further 2 to 3 days.
Shake container thoroughly before extracting dose.
Warnings:
Precautions : If the condition does not resolve with appropriate symptomatic therapy, further diagnostic evaluation should be considered.
Warnings : Safety in pregnant animals has not been established. Faecal colour may appear darker and be misinterpreted as melaena.
Meat Withholding Period : Horses - 28 days.

my dog has an extremely sensitive stomach.basically the canine version of IBS and he often has to take medication due to diarrhoea. Peptosyl really helps with the longevity of it and helps him to recover much quicker. its really great stuff

Great product
I had a 6 month old foal that got the runs from the green grass and it worked really well. I followed the directions and didn't have any issues with the product. The foal took it easily and due the liquid being a bit thick it was easy to administer and keep it in her mouth. Would have been nice if the product came with a applicator of some type to administer the dosage. Unfortunately Australia Post isn't reliable and the parcel was delivered later than expected and was also damaged and was just usable.
I have used peptosyl for a long time now and find it excellent stuff for any of my 4 dogs that get a stomach upset. We buy it for our flyball club for when travelling.
I have a Spaniel with gastric reflux. As soon as she starts frantic swallowing (from acid), a dose of peptosyl stops it in its tracks in seconds!!
An essential product to keep handy, and a very reasonable price.
My Lowchen gets an upset tummy from time to time - this is a great product to have on hand.
Found it too difficult to use for a horse. The strong smell and large dose required made it impossible for me to treat a newly acquired pony with stress scours - wanted to line her stomach before she ate and the ingredients would have worked.
We have 2 8mth old Cavaliers who have been having bouts of diarrhoea since we have had them. Chatting with you online it was decided to use this product. Next day I had to take 1 to the Vet as he had started again and the Vet sold me this exact same product. Worked a treat, and will always have it on hand for future use. And i must also add that your company has excellent priced products.
Can this product be use for kittens with an upset tummy? If so, what dosage please.

Peptosyl is not registered for use in cats or kittens.
Using it on kittens would be Off Label Use.
The usage of products "off-label" (ie for species other than those the product is registered for) should be undertaken strictly under the advice and direct supervision of your veterinary surgeon.
Only your vet is authorised to provide accurate advice in the use of preparations contrary to the label instructions***

Scourban is a prescription medication that you will need to source from a Veterinarian.
I would also contact your Vet regarding the scours, especially if everyone is scouring, you may need to take a sample in.

Can peptosyl be given to dogs long term...? My dog has its ..after a bad case of gardia...

Thank you for your Question.
No it should not be given long term.
You will need to speak with your Vet as the Giardia really needs to be treated.
Have you had the Giardia diagnosed? You may need to take a faecal sample to take in to your Vet with you.
Your dog may require antibiotics and/or treatment with other products.
Once the dog has been treated you could try using a probiotic just to help get the gut health back to normal.
