What is BetaCALM?

How does BetaCALM work?

BetaCALM has a unique combination of four ingredients to nutritionally support nervous horses without affecting performance.

Tryptophan is not produced naturally by the horse and beneficial levels are not found in feed. It is converted in the body to serotonin, which helps to induce a feeling of calmness.
• Vitamin B1 (Thiamine): A B vitamin that plays a vital role in nerve transmission. Hard-working horses or those on a high grain, low forage diet may have reduced production of thiamine in the hindgut due to stress or hindgut acidosis.
• Vitamin E: An antioxidant that helps to protect cell membranes from oxidative damage and maintain normal nerve and other functions.
• Magnesium: Important for cell metabolism, especially in the nervous system and muscles during work.

The specific levels of magnesium, vitamin B1 (thiamine), vitamin E and tryptophan may help to actively reduce the stress response during training, travelling and competition. With thiamine’s important role in energy metabolism and nerve transmission, and tryptophan’s role in the inhibition of stress and fear, deficiencies of these nutrients may cause anxiety, mental confusion and failure of muscle coordination. On top of this, magnesium has been found to reduce reactivity in horses.

Remember, there are many factors that can cause undesirable behaviour in horses including diet, age, training, housing, pain and digestive conditions. It is best to discuss your horse’s diet and history to determine whether changes in feeding and management practices are also required to reduce anxious behaviour. To help manage nervous horses, try providing constant access to forage, small meals and reduce starch/sugar in the diet. Also, decreasing stable time and providing equine company is very beneficial for mental health.

Kohnke's Own TRIM is a magnesium, organic chromium and choline supplement for horses. 

TRIM provides a range of important nutrients to correct low or inadequate levels in the rations of horses and ponies on weight reducing, low calorie diets. It can also be used to supplement prepared commercial low GI diets where the full recommended feeding rate is not fed and other high fibre feeds and soaked hay are added to increase the bulk of feed.

TRIM is formulated to provide specific nutritional support to horses and ponies which are overweight and obese and which have hard 'cresty' necks and abnormal fat deposits behind the shoulders and tail butt area. These signs are associated with conditions such as Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) and Insulin Resistance as a result of grazing pastures and the long term feeding of sweetened or processed feeds which contain high levels of starch and soluble nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) 'sugars'.

TRIM provides Magnesium to support metabolic function and glucose utilisation in body cells where diets are low in magnesium as well as Organic chromium which has a role in the regulation of glucose metabolism. (Chromium is known as the 'Glucose Tolerance Factor' in relation to insulin response) TRIM also contains Choline and manganese which have a role in the metabolism of fats.

TRIM also contains a range of other selected vitamins which have a role in glucose metabolism.

TRIM contains Vitamin C which is involved in the natural body synthesis of carnitine which has a role in the metabolism and breakdown of fats in the body, as well as to supplement Vitamin C as an antioxidant in tissues where natural liver synthesis from glucose may not be as efficient on a low GI diet.

Dosage Information:

There are many reasons why horses may seem to 'lose their appetite'. Some horses are just fussy eaters, while smaller horses have difficulty consuming large meals. However, many horses that are usually good eaters become picky or uninterested and start to leave food uneaten, particularly when work is commenced. IMPORTANT NOTE: Potassium is the primary electrolyte mineral found inside body cells. It functions to maintain the correct amount of fluid within the cell as well as normal electrical activity of the cells. Aristopet Stop Itch contains povidone Iodine which provides broad spectrum bacterial, fungicidal and antiseptic action for treatment of skin conditions in dogs and cats.
