Therefore, supplementation with an effective vitamin E supplement is recommended for all horses that do not consume a significant quantity of green pasture.

Natural Vitamin E is preferred.

Research has revealed that vitamin E varies in its potency, based on whether it is natural or synthetic. The chemical structures of synthetic and natural vitamin E differ. Natural vitamin E is recognized as "d-alpha-tocopherol," and is made up of a single isomer. Synthetic vitamin E, termed "dl-alpha tocopherol," contains a mixture of eight different isomers, four tocopherols and four tocotrienols. Of these eight, only one is molecularly equivalent to natural vitamin E. Sources of natural vitamin E, especially Nano E, more effectively raise serum levels when compared to synthetic.

To make alpha-tocopherol stable for use in most supplements, it must be chemically joined with an acid during manufacture, a process called esterification. The acid, in this case acetate, acts as a padlock or protective cap that shields alpha-tocopherol from the damages caused by exposure to oxidative forces. Without esterification, alpha-tocopherol can quickly denature, losing its antioxidant properties and rendering it ineffective.

Once ingested, esterified alpha-tocopherol is subjected to normal digestive enzymes. A certain group of enzymes called esterases are chemically capable of unlocking the padlock created through esterification. Once free, alpha-tocopherol is available for absorption with its antioxidant properties intact.

Delivering Vitamin E Eficiently.

Fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin E must be offered to horses in a way that maximizes absorption. Because it is not mixed with other ingredients, the vitamin E in Nano E does not need to be protected by esterification, but it must become water-soluble or dispersible in liquid. This presents a challenge: As everyone knows, oil and water don't mix.

Each water-soluble vitamin E nanoparticle in Nano E is encapsulated or surrounded by liposomes, which allows the nanoparticle to mix evenly throughout a water-based environment such as the gastrointestinal tract. Researchers developed a method by which fat-soluble vitamins can be absorbed with great efficiency. Because of its oily nature, vitamin E is hydrophobic (water-shunning). To overcome this, researchers use proprietary technology to encapsulate the vitamin E in nanoparticles and then surround each nanoparticle with a hydrophilic (water-loving) outer layer. The hydrophilic outer layer, allows the nanoparticles to be rapidly and evenly released in water-based environments such as the gastrointestinal tract.

The greatest benefit of this unique delivery system is an increase in the bioavailability of vitamin E. The more vitamin E that is absorbed into the bloodstream, the more available it is for use as a body-wide antioxidant essential for tissue repair and for its imperative roles in various body systems.

Controlled studies at Kentucky Equine Research indicate that Nano E is superior to synthetic and other natural vitamin E sources.

Confinement.

Horses that do not have access to pasture may not be consuming optimal levels of vitamin E. Nano E provides this essential vitamin in a form that is easily absorbed, and is appropriate for horses of all ages that are stabled due to training schedules, travel, or injury.

Performance.

Horses asked to work strenuously benefit from Nano E. A regular schedule of training and competition makes performance horses susceptible to muscle damage, which is due largely to oxidative stress. Nano E provides fast acting antioxidant protection for hard-working horses.

Breeding.

Hush is a calming supplement high in Mangnesium, B Vitamins and the essential amino acid Tryptophan.

Hush is used as a training and management aid for horses exhibiting excitable or irrational behaviour or during periods of mental stress. It is useful for breaking, training and transport of horses.

Tryptophan is an amino acid necessary for normal growth in foals and for nitrogen balance in adult horses. It is an essential amino acid, which means the body cannot produce it and it must be obtained from diet. Tryptophan is low in dried pasture and grain. It is used by the body to help produce niacin and serotonin. Studies have shown that serotonin may increase sleepiness or sedation and decrease aggression, fearfulness, mania, insomnia and pain sensitivity. Tryptophan deficiency is thought to increase nervousness and excitability in some horses. Management considerations could also help calm the excitable horse.

B-Complex Vitamins:
Athletic animals should be given a range of vitamins, minerals and amino acids in their diet to maintain optimal health. B-Group vitamins are intimately involved in energy metabolism - the conversion of food into fuel. They also stimulate the appetite and are involved in blood formation. Unfortunately most B-Vitamins are not stored in the body and need to be replenished daily.

Athletic animals, which exercise regularly and strenuously, have far greater requirements for vitamins, amino acids and minerals than non-athletic animals. Maximal exercise has been shown to reduce B vitamin levels, and suppress the blood counts of athletic animals. Many athletic animals have a low red blood cell count. Less red blood cells means less oxygen going to the muscles which means they cannot perform at their peak. The B complex vitamins and the trace minerals iron, copper and cobalt are required for the production of normal red blood cells. The need for B Complex Vitamins are increased in athletic animals in training and under stress.

B-1 Thiamine
Thiamine is necessary for the proper function of the heart and nervous system. Combines with phosphorus to form thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) necessary for metabolism of protein, carbohydrate, and fat; essential for growth, normal appetite, digestion, and healthy nerves. A deficiency of thiamine can cause weakness, fatigue, confusion, and nerve damage.

B-2 Riboflavin
Helps muscle cells produce energy. It is required by the body to use oxygen and the metabolism of amino acids, fatty acids, and carbohydrates. Riboflavin is further needed to activate vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), helps to create niacin and assists the adrenal gland. It may be used for red blood cell formation, antibody production, cell respiration, and growth. Vitamin B2 is required for the health of the mucus membranes in the digestive tract and helps with the absorption of iron and vitamin B6. Although it is needed for periods of rapid growth, it is also needed when protein intake is high. Riboflavine (Vitamin B 2) works with the other B vitamins. Vitamin B-6 is important for health of the blood vessels and red blood cells. Pyridoxine hydrochloride (Vitamin B 6) plays a role in the synthesis of antibodies by the immune system. Antibodies are needed to fight many diseases. Vitamin B 6 helps maintain normal nerve function and also acts in the formation of red blood cells. It is also required for the chemical reactions needed to digest proteins. The higher the protein intake, the more the need for vitamin B 6. Deficiency of this vitamin can cause irritability and confusion.

Magnesium
Magnesium in the body serves several important metabolic functions. It plays a role in the production and transport of energy. It is also important for the contraction and relaxation of muscles. Magnesium is involved in the synthesis of protein, and it assists in the functioning of certain enzymes in the body. Magnesium deficiency symptoms include muscle weakness, fatigue and hyper-excitability.

Jenquine Calsorb Forte is a fortified calcium block for horses on pasture. Bighead, calcium deficiency and osteoporosis are significant problems for horses on sub-tropical grasses - including buffel, panic, kikuyu and setaria. Oxalates in these grasses bind calcium - making it unavailable to the horse and increasing the risk of a dietary calcium deficiency.

Clinical signs of calcium deficiency, osteoporosis and nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism include intermittent lameness, stiffness, shortened stride, tendon and ligament weakness, dental problems, weight loss and fractures. Lime and other inorganic forms of calcium supplements are also bound by oxalates – only chelated calcium is safe from oxalates.

The importance of calcium: Calcium is essential for life itself (regulating heartbeat, nerve function, muscle contraction and blood clotting) and blood levels are tightly regulated by parathyroid hormone (PTH). PTH is released when diets are low in calcium — causing calcium to move out of the bones and into the blood, and leading to demineralisation of bones and osteoporosis. Mild cases are difficult to detect, manifesting as vague shifting lameness, shortened stride, soreness at ligament and tendon insertions, joint pain and swelling. In more severe forms, ligament and tendon injuries increase and there may be a watery nasal discharge, poor coat, difficulty chewing, dental pain and swelling of the jaws, maxilla, mandible and nasal bones.

Management and prevention: The dietary calcium deficiency must be corrected. Chelation protects calcium from oxalate attack, is over 95% absorbed into the blood stream and, in the presence of oxalates, is more bioavailable than inorganic forms (lime and dicalcium phosphate).
